Everybody sweats, but some people are afflicted with excessive sweating and the odor that comes with it. The medical term for this unfortunate issue is axillary hyperhidrosis. Having axillary hyperhidrosis means your body produces more sweat than what is necessary to regulate its temperature. (1) This condition can stain your clothes, produce odor, and even cause infections. It can increase your self-consciousness and have a major impact on your self-esteem. Luckily, miraDry technology offers a safe, quick, and effective remedy.
MiraDry is a lasting solution for excessive underarm sweat. It involves the use of safe, non-invasive, and state-of-the-art FDA-approved technology. A qualified provider administers thermal, electromagnetic energy to the underarm area to permanently destroy sweat and odor glands. This can significantly reduce sweat, hair growth, and odor in the treatment area. The device works by selectively heating the space between the skin and the underlying fat, where sweat glands reside. Because the sweat glands are rich in water and fat cells are not, the focused energy can treat the sweat glands without excessively heating what surrounds them. This is also achieved through simultaneous cooling by the miraDry device, which further narrows the treatment area down to the layer of sweat glands. (2)
Is miraDry Available for Home Use?
The miraDry System is restricted to sale, distribution, or use only upon authorization of a licensed practitioner. Ask a miraDry physician if the miraDry procedure is right for you. With miraDry treatment, you can feel confident going about your day without worrying about stained armpits or embarrassing odors.
Benefits of miraDry
There are numerous benefits of miraDry treatment, including:
- Dramatic reduction of underarm sweat
- Lasting results
- Non-invasive (no surgical incisions or cuts)
- Minimal to no downtime
- Performed in the physician’s office
Other treatment options, including antiperspirants and toxins, aim to temporarily disable the sweat glands for various durations – requiring repeat treatments to maintain effectiveness. Other options involve surgery, which contains inherent risks. Only the miraDry procedure gives you lasting results with a non-invasive solution. With this treatment, you can get on with your life and leave the burden of excessive sweat behind!
Who is a Candidate for miraDry?
If embarrassing underarm sweat outbreaks, stained clothing, or frequent antiperspirant applications interfere with your daily life, then you may be a good candidate for miraDry.
The miraDry system is indicated for the treatment of excessive underarm sweat (primary axillary hyperhidrosis) in adults 18 and over. However, you do not need a formal diagnosis to be eligible for this treatment. It cannot be used to treat hyperhidrosis elsewhere on the body, including the hands and feet. You can find out more about eligibility for miraDry treatment if you schedule a personal consultation at one of our offices.
At your personal consultation, we can answer any questions you may have about miraDry treatment. We will review your medical history and perform any tests we see fit to assess your current condition. We will create a personalized treatment plan and let you know what to expect moving forward. To schedule your personal consultation, fill out the form on this page or call us at one of our five Southern California locations!
We will give you personalized instructions for how to best prepare for your miraDry treatment. Properly preparing will help ensure that your treatment goes smoothly and your desired results are achieved. We may ask that you stop or start taking certain medications, including specialized soap to help prepare your underarms for treatment. You should shave your armpits four days before your procedure. We ask that you do so exactly four days prior so that the treatment area is neat, but also so that your provider can use the freshly re-grown hair to pinpoint exactly where the treatment will be most effective.
The miraDry procedure is safe and clinically proven to provide a significant reduction of underarm sweat. It is a quick, non-invasive outpatient procedure. The miraDry System delivers precisely controlled electromagnetic energy to the region where the underarm sweat glands reside and eliminates sweat glands. The clinician customizes treatment for each underarm with multiple placements of the miraDry System. Your provider will numb your underarms prior to the procedure to reduce discomfort. Local anesthesia is typically used, as it also has the effect of “inflating” the skin. This provides a kind of protective barrier between the miraDry device and your sweat glands. You will feel a slight suction while your provider applies the miraDry device to your skin. It cools and heats your skin simultaneously, making for a comfortable treatment experience. The suction works to bring your sweat glands closer to the device as it applies the focused electromagnetic energy. We typically recommend two procedures spaced 3 months apart to maximize the results and their duration. Each procedure appointment generally lasts about an hour.
We will provide you with specific instructions for your recovery, including tips for caring for your treatment area. You can expect minimal to no downtime following the procedure. Your physician will likely recommend a mild over-the-counter pain medication and the use of ice packs for a few days.
You should be able to return to normal activities or work right after the procedure, and you can typically resume exercise within several days. Some localized soreness or swelling is normal and typically clears within a few weeks. Some patients have temporary, short-term altered sensation in the skin of their underarms or upper arms, which gradually disappears.
Most patients report a dramatic reduction of their underarm sweat – in a recent clinical study, the average underarm sweat reduction was 82%. You should see a reduction in sweat immediately after treatment. Two procedures spaced three months apart are required to maximize the results and duration. The results are lasting because the sweat glands do not come back or regenerate after they have been eliminated. As with any medical procedure, results will vary by person.

Is miraDry a permanent solution to excessive sweating?
Yes, miraDry offers a permanent solution for reducing underarm sweat. Once the sweat glands are destroyed, they do not regenerate, resulting in long-term sweat reduction.
Don’t I need my underarm sweat glands?
Your body contains over 4 million sweat glands, with only about 2% located in the underarms. Eliminating this 2% will not affect the body’s ability to cool itself.
Can miraDry be used on other areas of the body?
miraDry is specifically designed for the treatment of underarm sweat. However, there are other treatments available for reducing sweat in other areas of the body, such as the hands or feet. During your consultation, we can discuss the options that best suit your needs.
How do treatments for excessive sweating work?
During the miraDry procedure, electromagnetic energy is delivered to the sweat glands in the underarm area. This energy heats and destroys the sweat glands, preventing them from producing sweat. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia and typically takes about one hour to complete.
What parts of my body can the miraDry system treat?
The miraDry System is indicated for use in the treatment of excessive underarm sweat (primary axillary hyperhidrosis) in adults 18 and over. It cannot be used to treat excessive sweating elsewhere on the body, including the hands and feet.
How is the miraDry procedure different from other treatment options?
Other treatment options are designed to temporarily disable the sweat glands, or involve surgery which contains inherent risks. Only the miraDry procedure provides a lasting solution with a non-invasive procedure.
