Xeomin Injectable CA

XEOMIN® (incobotulinumtoxinA) is a prescription medication injected into the muscles in order to treat a variety of conditions. It’s FDA-approved for its use as a cosmetic to temporarily improve the wrinkles or frown lines between the eyebrows, also known as the glabellar lines. Squinting and frowning causes the muscles between your eyebrows to contract, leading the skin to furrow and crease. XEOMIN® relaxes the muscles of the face and smooths the skin between your eyebrows for a more youthful look. XEOMIN® is a “naked injectable” due to the purity of the compound and absence of additives, and thus, it is less likely that the human body will develop a resistance to it in contrast to other types of Botulinum toxins such as Botox or Dysport. These wrinkles are known as dynamic wrinkles since they are caused by dynamic muscle contractions from facial expressions. Wrinkles cannot be prevented, however, they can be treated with injections like XEOMIN®. To learn more about what Xeomin can do for you, schedule a personal consultation at Dermfx today.

About

XEOMIN® is a purified botulinum toxin very similar to Botox. XEOMIN® was first introduced in Germany in July, 2005. It received approval for the treatment of blepharospasm and cervical dystonia, poststroke upper-limb spasticity (conditions involving uncontrollable movement) in a number of European countries, and then Argentina and Canada. It was discovered that it functioned well as a treatment for frown lines and wrinkles and received FDA approval in the United States in 2011 for cosmetic use. XEOMIN® is manufactured from a unique process that removes unnecessary proteins and inactive ingredients from Botulinum Toxin Type A, resulting in a compound with only the active therapeutic component.(1) As you age, your skin becomes thinner, drier, and loses its elasticity as the collagen, elastin, and other proteins that make up the connective tissue which keep our skin firm and supple break down. Aging also reduces the amount of hyaluronic acid in the skin, and this chemical is responsible for keeping moisture in the skin and giving it a hydrated glow. Furthermore, the repeated use of our facial muscles and their contractions result in wrinkles and frown lines. The active ingredient in XEOMIN® acts on the nerve endings in the muscles of the face, preventing the muscle fibers from contracting. By relaxing these muscles, XEOMIN® can temporarily reduce the lines between your eyebrows. If you’re looking to remove frown lines and restore your face to the smooth, glowing, appearance of its youth, then contact us at our offices today to schedule your free consultation.

Benefits

XEOMIN® allows you to turn back the years, safely eliminating wrinkles and restoring your face to its former youthful glow. XEOMIN® smooths the wrinkles and furrows on the skin between the eyebrows, across the forehead, around the eyes, and around the cheeks and mouth. It does this by blocking the signaling mechanism between the nerves and the muscles, preventing the muscles from contracting and creating more wrinkles. It has a rapid onset of action, providing results in a few days, and lasts several months. Botulinum toxin injections are the most common treatment for dynamic wrinkles due to the low cost and practically nonexistent recovery time. It has a very high overall treatment satisfaction rate from both patients as well as physicians. In a recent study, roughly 70% of patients saw improvement in just two days after their injections. By day 4, 100% of the patients in the study had glabellar lines that showed significant improvement, even while making facial expressions.(2)

Candidates

XEOMIN® is ideal for adults with moderate to severe glabellar lines who are not allergic to botulinum toxin. Treatment with XEOMIN® may not be right for you if you have had eye surgery or surgery on the face, if you have breathing problems such as asthma or emphysema, if you have a disease that affects the muscles or nerves such as ALS, or if you have drooping eyelids. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or plan to be, then XEOMIN® treatment should be postponed until afterwards. Be sure to inform our staff of any of these potential problems during your personal consultation.

Personal Consultation

In order to find out if XEOMIN® is the right treatment option for you, we discuss your personal goals as well as your medical history of illnesses, diseases, allergies, medications, and immunizations during your personal consultation. This includes whether you have undergone any botulinum toxin treatments within the last four months. We will be sure to alert you of any possible risks and considerations, and help you determine the best course of treatment for your unique goals and physiology.

Preparation

  • Make sure there are no skin infections, rashes, cold sores, or blemishes on or near the injection site prior to the procedure.
  • Do not consume alcohol one day prior to the procedure.
  • Do not consume Aspirin, Ibuprofen, or any other over-the-counter pain medications within a few days leading up to the procedure.

Procedure

The treatment procedure for XEOMIN® is relatively fast and easy. Your doctor will inject XEOMIN® into the muscles of your forehead or other areas of the face. No anesthesia is needed, however, the doctor may apply a cold pack or topical anesthetic before, after, or during treatment to reduce any discomfort. You may feel a slight pinch from the injection, however, other than that it is relatively pain-free. The entire treatment procedure should take no more than 10-20 minutes. Sometimes patients opt for a topical numbing cream so they don’t feel the injections. This can add time to the duration of the procedure since they will have to wait for it to take effect prior to the injection. After undergoing a XEOMIN® injection session, you’ll be able to go about your day as you normally would, but wait a day before performing any strenuous exercise or activity.

Recovery

The most common side effects from XEOMIN® treatment are mild discomfort, swelling, or redness at the site of the injections, as well as headache. Pain, bruising, and swelling may persist for up to two weeks after treatment.

To ensure a safe recovery from XEOMIN®, be sure to follow these guidelines:

  • Do not lie down for at least four hours after the procedure.
  • Do not exercise or perform physically strenuous activity for twenty-four to forty-eight hours after the injection.
  • Avoid touching, massaging, or applying pressure to the site of the injection.
  • Try to keep your head elevated during sleep for a few days after treatment.
  • If you experience any unusual levels of pain, swelling, or discomfort, contact your doctor immediately.

XEOMIN® can also react negatively with other medications such as certain antibiotics, muscle relaxants, sleep medicines, allergy medicines, and cold medicines. Do not begin any new medications after receiving XEOMIN® treatment without informing your medical practitioner that you have recently undergone XEOMIN® treatment. Keep a list of the medications you are using and show it to your doctor or pharmacist every time you begin treatment with a new medication.

Results

The results from XEOMIN® injections are noticeable almost immediately, and you may begin to see smoothing as early as three to four days after the treatment. The effects are most often noticed within one week, and reach their maximum efficacy at approximately one month.(3) The average duration of effect was three months, however, some patients experience results from XEOMIN® that last for over 6 months. You should never get a XEOMIN® treatment session if you have already gotten one within the last three months. XEOMIN® is often more effective than Botox, with results showing faster and lasting longer.

Corresponding & Complementary Procedures

XEOMIN® injections are frequently paired with dermal filler treatments to further enhance the anti-aging and smoothing effect on the skin. Dermal fillers treatments such as Restylane, Juvederm, Sculptra, Bellafill, and Radiesse also eliminate wrinkles and are best for treating the static wrinkles, or wrinkles that aren’t caused by facial muscular contractions. Dermal filler treatments work well with XEOMIN® since they can be used in tandem, each one targeting a different type of wrinkle. We’ll discuss the best treatments to compliment your XEOMIN® treatment during your personal consultation. XEOMIN® should never be paired with other Botulinum toxins such as Botox or Dysport.
