What is XpresHAn Technology?

XpresHAn is a unique cross-linking technology used in the formulation of Restylane Defyne. XpreHAn technology enables hyaluronic acid (HA) chains to maintain more flexibility in the skin before breaking. This agile behavior allows HA chains to more easily cross link with skin cells to flex within them, allowing for more natural-looking facial movement and expression.

Hyaluronic acid (HA) occurs naturally in the human body. It is a humectant which attracts water to add moisture to and volumize the skin. It also provides structural support for the surrounding skin tissues, helping to create a fuller, well-hydrated appearance. However, over time and with age, the human body produces less hyaluronic acid, leading to wrinkles. Restylane Defyne utilizes a specially formulated synthetic hyaluronic acid that mimics the naturally occurring hyaluronic acid in the human body. Defyne helps to restore moisture to your skin for a fresher, smoother, dewy appearance.

Defyne is a next generational HA dermal filler introduced in 2016 by Galderma, the dermatology company which creates Restylane products. Defyne contains high lifting capacity for nasolabial folds, laugh lines (marionette lines), cheeks, and the chin. Defyne is formulated using the novel XpresHAn cross-linking technology.

Restylane Defyne vs. Restylane Refyne

Both Restylane Defyne and Refyne are next-generation formulations for HA dermal fillers. Introduced in 2016, they are both anti-aging treatments that utilize the patented XpresHAn technology, which enables dynamic expression. Where the two gels differ, however, is in the density of the technology, which impacts the malleability of each gel. Refyne is more malleable, and Defyne is more dense. As a result, Defyne’s high-density formulation can effectively fill deep creases and folds, and add volume to the lower face. The malleability of Refyne better lends itself to treating mild age lines and providing moderate lift to the face.

Preparation

Proper preparation will ensure that you experience the best results possible from Restylane Defyne injections. To effectively prepare, you should:

• Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
• Avoid topical skin treatments like retinol and glycolic acid.
• Discuss your medical history and allergies with your doctor.
• Inform your doctor if you are on immunosuppressive therapy.
• Avoid alcohol three days before treatment to prevent excess swelling.
• Avoid foods high in sodium. Sodium causes water retention which can worsen swelling.
• Avoid waxing, tweezing, hair removal two days before treatment to minimize skin irritation.
• Begin taking arnica montana before treatment to reduce swelling. Continue after the procedure as recommended.
• Inform your doctor if you have a history of cold sores. Treatment carries the risk of causing an outbreak. So you may need to be prescribed medication to prevent one.
• Avoid blood-thinning medications, supplements and vitamins one week before treatment to prevent excessive bruising–including Advil, Aleve, aspirin, Nuprin, Bufferin, ibuprofen, fish oil, ginkgo, St. John’s Wort, ginseng, and garlic.
• On the day of your appointment arrive well-rested, well-nourished, and hydrated.

IS RESTYLANE LYFT SAFE?

Restylane Lyft filler is extremely safe and natural to the body. It was FDA approved in May 2007 for the treatment of mild to moderate facial creases. Restylane Lyft is made of non-animal stabilized hyaluronic acid (NASHA) gel; therefore there is no need for an allergy skin test. It contains a natural substance already present in our body.

HOW LONG DOES IT LAST?

Restylane Lyft filler is naturally biodegradable so its effects are not permanent. It can provide longer lasting results than other fillers because it is higher concentrated with large size particles. Results typically last up to nine months or longer. However, the effect is individual and depends on many factors. Restylane Lyft will gradually disappear from the body. It can also be dissolved using hyaluronidase. DermFx recommends that you plan for regular future visits to maintain the result. This has been shown to increase a lasting result.

HOW IS THE TREATMENT PERFORMED?

To maximize patient comfort, DermFx uses a local numbing medication before the treatment. Once the treated area is numbed and cleansed with alcohol, Restylane Lyft s injected directly into the skin slowly and safely in small amounts. The gel produces volume under the wrinkle, which is lifted up and smoothed out. The treatment generally takes 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the size of the area. Restylane Lyft is approved for fine lines, wrinkles, and mild to moderate facial folds. It can also be used in plumping eyebrows, smoothing the hollow area under the eye region, softening acne scars and depressions, contouring cheeks, the jaw line, chin and hands. Restylane Lyft is often used to enhance and define lips to create more shape and give a natural soft fullness.

HOW SOON CAN I EXPECT RESULTS?

You can expect to see results immediately.

ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS?

Depending on the individual, patients may experience swelling, itching, redness, or tenderness in the treated area. These are normal and will subside. Swelling may take longer to dissolve for lip injections. With any injection there is a risk for a bruise at the injection site. It is recommended to avoid taking aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, St. Johns Wort and high doses of Vitamin E supplements for one week after treatment. These may increase bruising and bleeding at the injection site.

HOW LONG IS THE RECOVERY TIME?

There is little to no down-time involved in a Restylane Lyft procedure. Most patients return to their normal, daily activities right after their visit. Every patient is unique so be sure to discuss your plans with the staff at DermFx in your consultation. Avoid touching the treated area within six hours following the treatment so you do not accidently injure your skin while the area is numb. Cold compresses may be used immediately after treatment to reduce swelling.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN RESTYLANE LYFT AND RESTYLANE?

Restylane Lyft differs from the Restylane filler in that it contains a larger concentration of hyaluronic acid. Because of the larger thicker particle size, Restylane Lyft can be used for larger folds and deeper creases. Restylane Lyft is also more expensive then Restylane filler because it has a higher concentration of hyaluronic acid.

HOW LONG DO RESTYLANE TREATMENTS LAST?

In a clinical study of subjects treated for laugh lines with Restylane Refyne and Restylane Defyne, investigators reported improvement in the appearance of wrinkles for up to 12 months in the majority of patients. Using the Wrinkle Severity Rating Scale (WSRS), a validated 5-point measure of the size and depth of the wrinkles, with grade 1 defined as absence of wrinkles and grade 5 as extremely deep and long wrinkles, investigators reported that 79% of Restylane Refyne subjects and 77% of Restylane Defyne subjects had at least a 1-grade improvement on the WSRS after 6 weeks. Subjects also performed self-assessments (SSA) of wrinkle severity, with most reporting at least a 1-grade improvement in SSA scores with Restylane Refyne and with Restylane Defyne after 6 weeks.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE RESTYLANE TREATMENTS TO WORK?

Depending on your volume needs, most Restylane treatment appointments last less than an hour and begin to work almost immediately by adding volume to smooth away wrinkles. A clear gel formulation of hyaluronic acid, Restylane products act like your body’s own hyaluronic acid (and eventually break down naturally). Each Restylane product is designed for a specific purpose.

WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS OF RESTYLANE PRODUCTS?

After your treatment, you may experience side effects, such as swelling, redness, pain, bruising, headache and itching at injection site and tenderness. These are typically mild in severity and normally last less than 7 days in nasolabial folds and less than 14-18 days in lips. Patients should be limited to 6.0 mL per treatment of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds. Swelling may be more likely in patients under 36 years, and bruising may be more likely in patients over 35 years.

HOW MANY TREATMENTS OF RESTYLANE PRODUCTS ARE NEEDED?
