Blepharoplasty

The eyes are an integral part of our facial expression. Often times they reveal more about our thoughts and emotions than we realize. As we age, the soft tissue in the eyes will often sag or bunch up making us look tired, sad, or apathetic.

The aging process causes the eyelid skin to lose much of its elasticity creating an appearance of bunched up excess skin, bags under the eyes, and bulging in the upper and lower eyelids. The eyebrows will often droop over the eye exacerbating the problem.

Dr. Miller performs several procedures that restore the natural, rested, youthful look to the eyelids. Using very small incisions in the eyelid the excess skin can be removed, and the underlying fat can be sculpted. Bags in the lower eyelids can be managed using small incisions either on the outside of the eyelid or on the inner surface of the eyelid making the incisions almost undetectable. These procedures can be done under local anesthetic or general anesthetic. They can be combined with a brow lift, a face lift, or all three. Dr. Miller provides each patient with a detailed analysis and taylors the procedure to meet their specific needs.

Frequently asked questions

Q:
Who is a good candidate for this procedure?
A:
Anybody who has excess upper or lower eyelid skin with bags or areas of bulging. There is no specific age limit.
Q:
How do you do this procedure?
A:
We can do this procedure under local anesthetic in our accredited clinic or we can do it in an accredited surgery center under general anesthetic.
Q:
How long does this procedure take?
A:
The upper eyes alone take about 45 minutes. The lower eyes alone take about 1 hour. Together it takes between 90 minutes and two hours.
Q:
How long is the recovery time?
A:
Everybody heals at their own pace. Generally, most bruising, swelling and scarring is resolved by one week. I usually recommend about three days off from work in order to heal. Stitches are removed between three and five days post-operatively. Patients are given thorough pre and post-op instructions at the time they make the decision to move forward.
Q:
Can I do other procedures at the same time as a blepharoplasty?
A:
Yes. Each patient has different wants and needs. Some patients will have a face lift done at the same time as their blepharoplasty. Some will do a brow lift at the same time. Others will add laser treatment or fillers and botox. There are many options and Dr. Miller covers these in detail during the patients initial assessment.
